Mary McDonald

Much has been said around the blogosphere about BRAVO's new hit show Million Dollar Decorators. My personal favorite standout is Glamour Girl, Mary McDonald. While her style is quite a bit more over the top than mine I can still appreciate her awesome mash up of modern, feminine & glossy.

Her flooring choices are what have inspired me most. I'm in love with all of the pattern painted floors she does. I've seriously been considering a chevron painted garage floor- why can't a garage be pretty too?

Not only is her work gorgeous but so is her wardrobe! Those big chunky necklaces paired with easy breezy tunics make her the poster girl for California Chic.

Have you watched the show yet? What are your thoughts? If I could change anything we'd see more of Mr. Nathan Turner

Below Mary is trying to convince her client the floors will be great once the rest of the installation is complete.

She was so right!

Last October Mary put a book out available on Amazon here

family room updates

Something had been amiss in the Arkanoff family room and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I kept thinking it was the paint color on the walls when one day not too long ago it hit me like a bolt of lightning. It was those dang giant natural wood french doors. They were casting an orange "oakey" hue onto everything.  So I grabbed the primer and dove in not even considering the amount of work ahead of me. I blogged yesterday about the exact number of coats in store. Once I finished one side completely it was clear that had definitely been the problem. That was sort of the turning point where I felt back on track. A little trip to Bloomington, IN last week netted us a couple of great finds that felt like tied up all the loose and ends. The space is D-O-N-E. {till i get bored of course}

I swear I did not pose the dog. Thats just Trixie.

The aforementioned recently painted frenchies to the left. Poufs from Calypso St. Barths for Target.

pillows clockwise from top: large white euro is simply shabby chic for target, yellow flower pillow is dwell for target and the grain sack union jack is from Lola Rue and Company in Bloomington.

That sweet 1950's school map of Europe is also from Lola Rue. It brings the color and energy I feel like we were lacking before. I'm not even going to pretend that we don't have a gaudy plastic playhouse because I'll own it. It's a family room and right now the littlest member of our family loves to play in there. Not to mention it fills up the weird space under the stairs nicely. {for now} Note another glass paneled door going into the laundry, don't worry it's on my list.

i love the buffet that we picked up this past winter from a local antique store. it's the perfect size to hold that man t.v., it's got tons of storage not to mention character that newer pieces we looked at lacked.

The mantle got a nice little update too. To make room for the old new wall map the chalkboard i made got bumped to above the fireplace which is where it probably should have been all along because it fits so well there. i made a quick summertime sailing flag inspired bunting and clipped it up. {tutorials on the chalkboard and the bunting coming soon}

A view going up the stairs to the foyer, kitchen, living/dining level.

Hope you enjoyed your tour.

Tune in tomorrow... I just might be giving away a snazzy dress from here!

Au Revoir my friends!

white painted frenchies

I've got a bit of a natural wood glass paneled door collection on my hands in this house. One pair of french and 4 more singles. Thats 6 doors or 12 sides which need 2 coats of primer each= 24 plus 2 more coats of white trim paint= 24. 24+24= 48 whopping coats of paint not to mention all of the scraping afterwards. So far I've got one side of the frenchies totally done. 8 down 40 more coats to go.

I need a little inspiration to keep me going!

wish me luck!

a message to my men

Happy Fathers Day to the two best men I know.

{daddy I'm so grateful you taught me to be so strong and honest. You showed me how to fish and how to throw a baseball. You made sure I loved The Beatles as much as you do and to always write a thank you card. I love you so much and I'm one lucky girl to have you.}

{Nick I'm so blessed to have you and I thank my lucky stars every day that you found me. You are an amazing daddy to our little girl and she loves you so very much. Happy Fathers Day!

new fence and arbor

We got our new fence and arbor put up recently. When we bought the house we knew we'd need a fence for safety reasons (steep drop off down to creek) and I've always dreamed about an arbor! I can't wait to get a clematis growing up it. I've also been busy transplanting nice size hosta's and ferns all over the place, I'm beginning to love this crazy yard.
